TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP

LANGUAGE
The official languages are Spanish (80% of the population), Quechua (Andean region or highlands) and Aymara (Puno altiplanic regions). Moreover, there are approximately 50 native languages. It is possible to talk in English with tour guides or people who work in hotels and restaurants. You can request in advanced for a guide in another language in order to take the tours.

AIRPORT TAXES
Each airport requires that you pay for the use of its installations. This is called the T.U.U.A. or airport use tax, which must be paid before boarding your airplane and differs according to the city of departure. The T.U.U.A. of Jorge Chavez International Airport (Lima) is U.S. $6.05 for domestic flights and U.S. $30.25 for international flights. It is necessary to pay the tax for domestic flights as well as for international flights.

ELECTRICITY
The electricity used in Lima is 220 volts. You can use transformers to change electricity into another voltage. Some 4 and 5-star hotels in Lima offer and are equipped for 110 volts.

TAXES
The tax in Peru is 19%, which should be registered in the consumptions done; the final price should be registered in your bill.
In the case of lodgings, tourists are exonerated from the Sales Tax (I.G.V.), but they have to pay the service tax (10%) in hotels and some restaurants.

TAXIS
It is advisable to you use the services of a taxi company (requested by phone) or those authorized by the city halls (generally yellow colored and showing the license plate number on both sides of the vehicle).

Taxis do not use meters in Peru. You must negotiate the price of the service before getting into the taxi.
There are also informal taxis on the streets, which do not have authorization. It is advisable to write the number plate down. Tipping is not a common practice.

BUSES
City buses (the cheapest alternative) are identified by colors and numbers established according to the route. Most of these have long routes. Learn about the routes before taking them, and do not use them late at night. The average price is S/. 1.00 to S/. 2.00.

PUBLIC TELEPHONES
Public telephones accept coins and phone cards that are sold in kiosks and supermarkets. Make certain that you are buying the phone card from the company you wish to use. It is possible to make collect calls from some public phone booths.

NIGHTLIFE
Most cities in Peru offer a variety of nightlife. In Lima, there are peñas (stores offering traditional live music), discotheques, pubs, and night clubs in several districts. The most popular are found in Miraflores, San Miguel, Pueblo Libre, San Isidro, and Barranco. The location of nightlife locales in other cities is normally in the downtown (Main Square and its surroundings).

FORMS OF PAYMENT
The principal cities in Peru have cash dispenser, which accept different types of cards.
The most acceptable credit cards are American Express, VISA, Diners and MasterCard. The use of travelers’ checks has restrictions so we advise you to ask if they are accepted or not before buying any product.

TIPS
The amount of a tip will vary and depend upon how satisfied you are with the service given. An appropriate tip is considered to be 10% of the bill, but it is not always taken in consideration.
