CURRENCY IN PERU
The official currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (S/.), which is divided in 100 cents.
Currencies of different value are in circulation in Peru:
- 0.01 ,0.05, 0.10,0.20 cents
- 1.00 ,2.00 ,5.00 new soles
- 10.00 ,20.00 ,50.00 ,100.00 ,200.00 bills
Accepted Currency
You can use American dollars without problems in gas stations, supermarkets, shopping centers, restaurants and hotels in Lima and principal cities in Peru. The current change rate will be use, and there is a difference in cents depending on the store.
Where to Change Money
You can change dollars easily in banks all over the country. There are money exchange houses in different shopping centers and/or on principal streets. In the case of banks, the change rate is higher than a money exchange house.
There are authorized money changers on the corners of the principal streets but it is preferable to do it in a close establishment for your security.
If you want to change another type of currency such as euros, Argentinean pesos, Chilean pesos, pound sterling, there are some money changing houses in the capital that also offer this services, money orders, etc.
In the airport, you can also change money safely.
